Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I am honoured to serve as a Steering Committee member of IUCN’s Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy (CEESP), as Regional Vice-Chair of IUCN CEESP Asia, and Chair of the IUCN CEESP Specialist Group on Gender. I am also a member of the Gender Task Force of IUCN Council’s Governance and Constituency Committee; Board member of the Hisaar Foundation on Water, Food, Livelihood Security; Technical Advisor to the Trust for Conservation of Coastal Resources (TCCR); Treasurer and Board member of the Karachi Conference Foundation. Since 1985, my professional career has been dedicated to advancing gender, environment, and social issues in the conservation world. With a Masters in Sociology, I bring a rich sociological and gender perspective to IUCN. My professional experience includes working with communities, provincial and national governments, civil society, and academia. I have developed a deep understanding of IUCN over three decades by working with NGO members of IUCN in Pakistan: Shirkat Gah and TCCR. I served as member of the IUCN Pakistan National Committee and participated in five of IUCN’s World Conservation Congresses. I have supported delivery of IUCN projects: the rehabilitation of mangroves in Pakistan, and the Asia Regional Office’s Mangroves for the Future Programme. As the Regional Vice-Chair for CEESP Asia, I have focused on increasing the Commission membership in Asia. These intense engagements with IUCN position me well to fulfil the tasks of Regional Councillor.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

As a Gender and environmental practitioner, I engage with different organizations, and individuals, at all levels. I have travelled to represent CEESP, and IUCN, in Asia and globally. Throughout my professional career, I have worked with different communities in Pakistan and Asia, interacted with NGOs in different countries, from communities to policy level, and learnt the importance of participatory processes. Through various IUCN events, I have understood how IUCN functions as a unique organization, which is led by its Members, managed by the Secretariat, engages the Commissions, and where government and civil society work uniquely together. I have come to deeply understand IUCN through participation in numerous IUCN meetings, through my active role on CEESP, and engagement with the Asia Regional Members Committee meetings, and the IUCN National Committee for Pakistan. I have a deep and extensive understanding of gender issues, women’s roles and their interaction with natural resources, and the need to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all areas of conservation and sustainable development policy and practice. As Chair of the CEESP Specialist Group on Gender, I have developed the Gender component within CEESP through its programme and mandate, in coordination with the IUCN Global Programme on Governance and Rights. It is this knowledge and leadership on social and environmental issues, which I will bring to work with IUCN Members in Asia and globally.
