The Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation (PIRT): Nature conservation action in the Pacific

The session provides a broad strategic guidance for conservation initiatives undertaken by all stakeholders in the Pacific Region. In 2002 the 7th Pacific Islands Nature Conference was held in Rarotonga. At that Conference, delegates created and adopted this 30 Year Vision for Conservation in the Pacific. There is an overall Vision, characterized as ‘Healthy Oceans, Healthy Islands, Healthy People’, which is expanded in the text below. There is a Mission Statement: ‘To protect and preserve the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Pacific Islands forever for the benefit of the people of the Pacific and the world.’ And there are three goals, for Environment, Society and Economy. These have remained the foundation of all our Pacific action strategies and frameworks since 2002, and continues to be the foundation for our collective work for the next five years.
