Dr Susan CANNEY

Director of the Mali Elephant Project / Research Associate , WILD Foundation / University of Oxford

Dr Susan Canney is the Director of the Mali Elephant Project, having worked on a variety of nature conservation projects across Africa, Asia and Europe, and in sustainable development policy. Her chief interest is enhancing the ecological literacy in human decision-making using systems perspectives and collaborative approaches.

She has worked in central Mali since 2003, initially with Save the Elephants to understand the migration, and since 2006 with WILD Foundation to develop an integrated model of human-elephant co-existence that has endured despite the insecurity.

She is a Research Associate of the Department of Zoology, Oxford University, a Trustee of Tusk Trust, a Tusk Award Judge, a member of the Sahara Conservation Fund’s Science and Conservation Committee, and of the African Elephant Specialist Group, and has co-authored a book on "Conservation" for Cambridge University Press.
