Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:As a head of the Biodiversity and Forestry department, I am responsible for policy-making at the national level, involving various fields of IUCN concern. Currently, my department is working on various issues, including conservation of species and habitats, development and management of the Red List, biodiversity monitoring, protected areas, forests, hunting, fisheries, etc. The IUCN principles is an essential guidance for our work. It should also be noted that our protected areas system in Georgia, as well as the Red List is developed based on the IUCN principles. However, we have also been working on development of the Emerald Network, UNESCO and Ramsar sites. It is clear that IUCN has a special role and authority in the region. My goal is to further expand and strengthen representativeness of IUCN in the region. The department I am leading is also responsible for development and implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and law making. In order to ensure conservation of the species and habitats, sustainable use of wildlife, as well as fulfil international obligations, we have developed two draft laws: the Forest Code and the Biodiversity Law. These draft laws are considered to be transformational once adopted. Finally, one of the most important issues I would like to highlight is resource mobilization. As a person responsible for budgeting, I would like to support the countries within the region in the resource mobilization.
