Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
My career has been international, and is comprised of several five-year working periods in Africa, Asia and Europe. I have a long history of working with the IUCN Secretariat in different regions and at Headquarters. My responsibilities have ranged from project implementation and programme oversight to national coordination and senior management. My last position with IUCN was Regional Director for Europe from 2008 to 2013. From 2013 to 2019, I was the Head of the only inter-governmental organisation with its Headquarters in China – INBAR. I was the CEO of the organisation and had diplomatic status in China. I have proven experience with office, personnel and financial management. I was a member of the Board of the IUCN National Committee of the Netherlands and of the Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development. I am currently a member of the Board of SUNx Malta, a new organisation that focuses on climate-friendly travel and tourism. I am a member of the CEM, and was member of the WCPA Karst and Cave Working Group. My English language skills are excellent, I am known for my presentation skills and I am a prolific LinkedIn user. Dutch is my mother tongue and I am comfortable in communicating in French and German. In April this year, I stepped down from a full-time position, and I am now semi-retired, living in Malta. I will be able to devote energy and time to the IUCN Council. I am not representing a State, an organisation or a particular interest group.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

My work has been guided by the United Nations Millenium Development Goals and more recently the 2030 Development Agenda and its associated Sustainable Development Goals. My most recent job in China as Head of an IGO has given me a clearer understanding of international politics and nature considerations. I believe that this global perspective will be an asset for the IUCN Council. As a former member of the IUCN Water and Nature Initiative, I have a keen interest in wetlands. I helped to establish the Uganda wetlands programme. In IUCN Headquarters, I promoted the involvement of the private sector, and was instrumental in early IUCN partnerships with the cement industry. I was advisor to the European Crop Protection Association, and I currently work as advisor for a company that provides nature-based solutions for economic development. The experience of working with the private sector will also be helpful in Council deliberations. I strongly support the work of governments and the United Nations, but realise that non-governmental organisations have an equally important role to play in monitoring our governance systems and raising public awareness. This combination of views makes IUCN so special. I have participated in World Heritage nomination assessments in China, the Philippines and Vietnam, and I have a keen interest in protected area management. Bamboo has remained as a particular area of interest, after five years in China at the helm of the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation.
