In line with the IUCN guidelines on Transboundary Conservation, five regional governments in Italy and France established a program in 2017 for both conserving biodiversity of the Western Alps and developing the area. They gathered in a unique framework of 27 organizations/institutions to set up a 8.9 M€ program on a biogeographical area covering 60,000km² and concern potentially 3M people.
Objectives of the session are to present the different steps to reach the matrix of responsibilities that underlies this program and organize such cooperation. The conceptual framework that underpins the program and the governance processes to co-built the strategy will be also presented. In addition, results from transboundary conservation activities will be discussed.
Regional governments involved in this program are also looking for best practices elsewhere, and potential exchange opportunities, to strengthen the program, to conceive its relevant evaluation and to foster further prospects.
