In this talk, we will present why Transformative Adaptation is important, what it looks like in practice, and when it can be applied. We will describe the characteristics of transformative adaptation based on a review of theoretical and empirical studies. We will first introduce some conceptual understanding to differentiate transformative adaptation from other types of adaptation, such as coping strategies and incremental adaptation. We will then present concrete examples of transformative adaptation based on Conservation International and partners experience implementing projects related to the use of nature to help people adapt to climate change (e.g. in Madagascar, Philippines, Colombia). Finally, we will present few methods that can help design projects or plans that consider transformative adaptation.
