Healthy wetlands for the cranes and people of Rukiga, Uganda

Rukiga’s wetlands in Uganda are under increasing human pressures from a growing human population needing access to farmland. The wetlands are vital for humans (for food and water security, and preventing flooding) and the Endangered Grey Crowned Crane (for nesting habitat). This session will provide information on how project partners from both the conservation and human health sectors are working together to design and implement an integrated project that aims to empower communities to conserve wetlands and cranes. Key project activities have been informed by qualitative research on the views and wishes of local communities and includes providing alternative sustainable livelihoods and voluntary healthcare services (to reduce unplanned pregnancy), coupled with habitat restoration, and soil and water conservation, enabling long-term wetland health for people and cranes. Delegates will be invited to ask questions in the Q&A session following speakers’ presentations.
